Sport is an important aspect of school life and students have many opportunities to participate. During the year students are entered into the School Sport Canterbury competitions in the following sports:


Athletics, Basketball, Bowls, Canoe Polo, Cricket, Cross Country, Cycling, Dragon Boating, Duathlon, Equestrian, Football, Futsal, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Motor Cross, Netball, Orienteering, Road Race, Rowing, Rugby, Shooting, Snowsports, Softball, Swimming, Surfing, Tennis, Touch, Triathlon, Volleyball.


Sport offered by Rangiora High School can vary from year to year depending on student interest and coaching availability.

Costs relating to sport will be charged to school accounts. 


Senior A Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams play in the Elite Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Thompson Trophy (boys) and Whelan Trophy (girls) competitions held on Tuesday nights. An Under 17 boys’ team play in the CBA competition on Saturdays. All other school teams play in the School Sport Canterbury Friday night competitions during Term 2 and 3.


Netball teams play in the North Canterbury Saturday competition. Our A teams also compete in School Sport Canterbury’s top Netball competitions for secondary schools on Wednesdays.


Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Rugby teams compete in the CRFU Midweek Wednesday competition, while the First XV Boys' Rugby team competes in The UC Championship, the Crusaders Region premier

rugby competition for secondary schools on Saturdays. The school’s 2nd XV competes in an Under 18 competition also on Saturdays. Each year an Under 15 boys’ team is selected to compete in a South Island tournament.


Volleyball teams play on Mondays in the School Sport Canterbury competition, depending on numbers and coaches available.


Touch teams play on Wednesdays in the School Sport Canterbury competition, depending on numbers and coaches available. Our Senior Mixed team currently plays in the School Sport Canterbury Super Touch competition on Wednesday and a midweek local competition.


Individual sports compete in separate events and competitions throughout the year.


Some ‘A’ teams may also compete in South Island or National sports tournaments during summer and winter school tournament weeks (if they qualify).


Sport exchanges with other High Schools help to encourage participation and enjoyment. At present there are exchanges with Ashburton College and Marlborough Boys’ College (rugby only).
