Peter Allen

Rangiora High School was saddened to hear of the death of Peter Allen on 30 August. Peter was the Principal of Rangiora High School from 1990 to 2002.

Peter led our school with strength, integrity and kindness. He introduced strong pastoral care systems, including the Peer Support Programme; he took a leading role in the promotion of a bicultural approach to education with the establishment of the whānau class and the building of the whare; and he shared his love of the outdoors through his attendance on many school camps and with his work on the North Canterbury Alpine Trust, the governing body of the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre.

In addition to his leadership of our school at a time of major change in education following the introduction of Tomorrow's Schools in 1989, Peter was involved at a national level with the introduction of NCEA which was launched at Rangiora High School in November 1998.

Peter's passing is a sad loss for the education community nationally. His wisdom, his enthusiasm and his passion for young people, for education, and for his community will be sadly missed.

Our thoughts are with Helen and the family at this sad time. Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui Tāne.
